Alternatives to Consider Before Short-Term Credit

Several lower-cost or lower-risk options may be available, depending on your situation.

An urgent bill creates pressure to decide quickly. Before accepting short-term credit, pause long enough to identify the exact amount and deadline. Sometimes the problem can be solved without borrowing the full amount—or without borrowing at all.

Ask the company you need to pay

Contact the utility, medical provider, landlord, insurer, or creditor before the due date. Ask about a payment plan, due-date change, hardship program, fee waiver, or temporary reduction. Get any arrangement in writing and confirm whether interest or late fees continue.

Explore credit-union options

A local credit union may offer a small-dollar product or another lower-cost option. Membership requirements, underwriting, fees, and timing vary, so compare the full cost and do not assume every credit-union product is inexpensive.

Check workplace and community resources

Some employers offer payroll advances, emergency assistance, earned-wage access, or employee hardship funds. Local nonprofits, religious organizations, food programs, housing counselors, and public-benefit offices may help reduce the expense creating the shortfall.

Consider family help carefully

If family or friends can help, agree on the amount, repayment dates, and what happens if circumstances change. A written plan can protect the relationship and prevent misunderstandings.

Decision test: Compare cost, speed, privacy, repayment pressure, and the consequence of missing a payment—not only whether money is available today.

Reduce the amount needed

Split the expense, postpone a nonessential purchase, sell an unused item through a safe marketplace, or use part of an emergency fund. Combining smaller solutions may avoid one expensive obligation.

Know when to step back

If repayment would require another loan, cause an overdraft, or put housing, food, medicine, or transportation at risk, the product may not fit your budget. Speedy does not guarantee that any provider or alternative will be available.
